Hey! Thanks for stopping by,
My name is Alex! I have been playing around in different bands for years and one issue I came across was finding someone to mix and master our songs in a timely manner. So I started saying, "Screw it, let me do this and skip the middle man and in the end, it will sound exactly how we want it." After recording, mixing, and mastering my own music for years and slowly building up the back log of mixing gear and many dozens of state of the art plugins, I decided to open up West Juniper Studios. We are a small music studio based out of Gilbert, Arizona.
1 - Send your song over. In the email be as descriptive as you want to be. If you have some reference tracks or voice-memos of your song those would be helpful as well, or even if you have songs you want the mix to sound similar to let me know.
2 - I will send the song back to you, then you give me feedback. If you aren't a fan of the levels of something let me know I can change it!
3 - Repeat step 2
4 - Repeat step 3... (I will continue to help you make changes and improvements to your mix if there are little things that we need to keep working on.)
5 - I will send an invoice once we are finished.
I started West Juniper Studios with a few main goals in mind;
Modern Consumption - You have received your mix back from a sound engineer that was hot shit in the 90's, you play it on your big home speakers, its great! Now you upload it onto Instagram to post, and now it might be the worst thing you've heard. With social media your song is now mostly getting played through iPhone speakers (and sometimes AirPods). So how do you make your song come across as an absolute banger on all devices? What I have noticed is many producers rely way too much on their studios monitors; you need to get a grasp of how the song comes across on your phone, earbuds, headphones, TV, and car stereo. That song is not going to be listened to on studios monitors outside of it being mixed in the studio. With that being said, I still use studio monitors (Yamaha HS8) to get the mix most of the way, then I start going between all different devices to make sure it comes across the same to all of these different playback outlets.
Speed - Ever meet a mixing / mastering engineer that takes forever to get back to you with your mix? Yeah... same here... I want the music artist to feel like they are still apart of the process. Your music is your baby -- I am just the delivery nurse. You shouldn't feel like you have been robbed when you just put all of this effort and momentum into getting this music ready for the world... only for it to be kept on some old geezers hard drive for way too long. "Don't worry he will get to it..." "Thanks, old man. I am so glad I gave my music to the dude that produced some song my mom danced to at her senior prom!!" No, you need results! There should be no waiting around for someone to understand Dropbox or email attachments. Let's keep that fire from the recording sessions going and let's get this thing mixed right away.
Open to Critique - Awesome, you picked a guy to work on your music and spend your money with. The sad thing is that he is going to make it sound like the stuff he made a century ago (he doesn't want your suggestions either)... now you're stuck with a mix you're not a fan of and you are out of money. When you send your mix, send songs you want it to sound like too. I don't want to leave music artists with a "what could have been." Give me your suggestions; if I send a song to you and you think the song will sound better with the cowbell cranked up... Tell me! Seriously! This is your song first, then it is the listeners enjoyment second, then after that it is my sonic landscape to paint into your ears.
Over the past 4 years and working along side Grammy award-wining producers I have found out what makes an award-wining mix, and even won an award along the way. At West Juniper we test your mix on many different music playback platforms to insure you get an amazing sounding mix across all devices.
What is mastering? Doesn't it just make your music louder? Mastering is preparing your music for Spotify, Youtube, Apple Music...etc... Getting your final mix to correct volumes without it coming across as over compressed seems hard, but there are parameters to uploading music. You don't want it to be too quiet; it needs to be at the same volume as everyone else's music too.
